FAQs

  • What kinds of classes do you offer?

We are a Classical Ballet School. In addition to Classical Ballet, children study National Character Dance (commencing in Ballet Prep) and Jazz (commencing in Level 1).

Our Adult Students are offered Jazz in addition to Classical Ballet classes.

During Holiday Workshops, children participate in other subjects such as creative dance, contemporary dance, mime, music and Pilates.

  • What age can my child start?

Children from 5 years are able to better cope with dance training as they can concentrate longer and better understand key concepts. Starting ballet when the child is truly ready will be rewarded with good technical development and reduce chances of injury. Our Ballet Play class is well-suited to children 5 years and older. If you have a particularly keen child who is just shy of 5 years and who is able to concentrate for 45 minutes, it may be possible to enrol - please contact us.

  • Do I have to wear a uniform?

The uniform is compulsory for children. We ask that all children are neatly dressed, and that girls secure their hair off the face in a ballet bun.

Adults are free to choose their own attire however ballet shoes are compulsory for your safety.

  • Where can I find dancewear?

Note: Children's Uniform is available from Bloch.

  • What is the Russian Vaganova Classical Ballet Syllabus?

The Russian Vaganova Classical Ballet Syllabus is the training method used in most professional ballet companies, and their associated schools, both in Australia and world-wide. It is proven to produce excellent results with both vocational and recreational students because it teaches each dancer to move her/his body intuitively with grace, style and strength. For more information, see The Russian Method

  • How much do classes cost?

We offer an excellent dance curriculum at reasonable prices.

When comparing prices please consider the number of lessons per week, and the duration of those lessons. MSCD's children's program includes tuition up to four times weekly with classes of 90 minutes duration from Level 1. This allows us to give careful, unhurried tuition and individual attention to every student.

  • When will my child move up to the next level?

We care about each student's progress. Whether a young dancer is dancing recreationally or is interested in a career in dance, it is very important that they attend classes at their particular level. This reduces the risk of injury or frustration. Each student is evaluated individually and will be promoted to the next level when they are ready.

  • Should I/my child have private lessons?

Private lessons provide personalised tuition which assists students to progress at a faster rate than is possible in group classes. They may be taken in combination with group lessons or independently. Private tuition can focus on areas needing improvement or on general technique. Such areas may include posture, flexibility, strength, co-ordination, turns or jumps. Other reasons that private lessons may be recommended to students include: To make up missed classes, assist in transition from another dance school, beginning studies later than usual, preparing for a competition or to work on a technical problem. Adult beginners often prefer private lessons as it enables them to work at their own pace. Sessions are usually 60 minutes. Please contact us if you are interested in private tuition.

  • Do you offer assessments?

Children in Ballet Prep and higher levels are assessed annually. Assessments are held at our studio with a guest examiner.

Our Adult Students are not assessed, however they are offered an opportunity to demonstrate their dancing in our annual concert.

  • Does your school have an end of year concert?

Yes, all students are invited to perform in our annual concert which is held in December.

  • Do I have to purchase costumes or sew costumes?

You are not required to purchase or sew costumes.

We have a costume collection and we hire costumes to students for the annual production. We also take care of transportation and cleaning of costumes.
