HOW TO SEW SHOES

Ballet shoes typically come with a loose elastic strap that must be hand-sewn onto each shoe. Simply sewing the strap straight across the top of the foot will do little to hold the shoe on properly. To get the best fit, follow these instructions.

Steps

1. Fold the heel of the shoe flat against the insole, creating a triangle with the point of the heel as the apex.

2. Lay the elastic strap along the base of the triangle you have created.

3. Mark both ends of the elastic on the inside of your slipper in this position. Sew only one end on, being careful to keep the cut end facing the sole. Use the factory stitching along the drawstring as a guide. This will help ensure your drawstring remains free.

4. Put the shoe on and measure the length of the elastic by pulling the elastic strap over the instep so that it's snug, not loose. Sew the other end of the elastic onto the slipper (again, with the cut end facing the sole) to preserve this fit.

5. Clip any excess elastic.

Tips

  • Some people prefer to sew on two pieces of elastic, crossed in an "X" shape. This alternative method is popular among male dancers as well as those with tapered feet.
  • Sew the elastic so that it is attached tightly. Check the elastic regularly to see if any repairs are needed.
  • Burning the end of elastic will prevent fraying.

Warnings

  • Typical sewing warnings regarding sharp scissors and needles apply. Use appropriate precautions.
  • Sewing through the drawstring will make it difficult or impossible to appropriately tighten the opening of the shoe.
  • If you are a young dancer, always have an adult help you with burning the ends of elastic or ribbons.
